Job Overview

The Senior Mandarin Chinese Teacher position develops and implements curriculum for the school’s Mandarin Chinese language program and for instructing secondary/high school (grades 9-12) students in the Mandarin Chinese language. Position responsibilities include:

-Prepare lesson plans, objectives, and outlines, in alignment with curriculum guidelines and State and school requirements;
-Break down lessons into organized sections to help students process the material effectively;
-Establish and communicate objectives for all lessons, sections, and projects;
-Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods (such a TPRS- Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling), comprehensible input methods, and a variety of teaching materials, and adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests;
-Design traditional in-person educational activities and digital/online interactive activities and modules that require collaborative work to increase students’ language comprehension and speaking skills;
-Design and utilize a variety of educational materials and incorporate the usage of traditional Chinese treats and games to engage students at all skill levels and increase their participation and motivation and enhance their overall experience and performance in the class;
-Utilize a great amount of comprehensible input techniques, including pictures, gestures, simplified language, TPR, and caregiver speech speed within a meaningful context for students to learn Chinese in a meaningful way;
-Design test items and assessments to evaluate students’ proficiency (speaking, listening, and reading Mandarin Chinese) based on state and school standards and guidelines;
-Prepare study guides and other materials to help students prepare for tests and quizzes;
-Hold traditional and non-traditional study sessions, tutoring, etc. for students needing extra help, during and after school;
-Hold make-up learning sessions and tests after school as needed;
-Evaluate students’ proficiency and performance;
-Provide progress reports and meet with students, parents, and other faculty as needed to discuss students’ progress and overall performance;
-Conduct parent-teacher conferences regularly and as needed in accord with state and school guidelines and policies;
-Organize cultural related events, class projects, Chinese crafts, games, group activities, guest speakers, field trips and other cultural activities to enhance learning;
-Attend school-wide staff meetings and professional meetings; educational conferences, teacher workshops, trainings and seminars, etc.; serve on school committees; and
-Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative policies and regulations, and Board policies.

Requirements

-Master’s degree in Education, Asian Languages or a closely related field (or foreign equivalent degree).
-1 year of experience with teaching or tutoring occupations in Mandarin Chinese language.
-Fluency in the Mandarin Chinese language in order to instruct students.
