Christian Brothers College High School Director of Athletics, Dr. A.G. “Rocky” Streb, has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2021-22 school year. He first joined the CBC community as a football and wrestling coach in the fall of 2009 and became the school’s Director of Athletics in 2012. He came to CBC following a career in coaching and school leadership at Oakville High School.
“I first got to know CBC as a parent,” Streb said. “As I learned more and more, it became clear to me that this is a special place. Being part of this community allowed me to share in my son Nick’s CBC experience, and I’ve been honored to serve as a coach and Athletics Director at this great school. CBC is blessed with many of the very best coaches in our city – or in any city, for that matter. I have enjoyed supporting them as they teach lessons and make a lasting impact on the lives of our students.”
Dr. Streb’s leadership delivered an unparalleled decade of athletic success at CBC. Varsity teams competed in 49 final fours and won 20 state championships, while student-athletes also won 33 individual state titles. The school was named Athletic Program of the Year three times by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (2015, 2018, 2019) and more than 200 student-athletes earned scholarships to compete in college at universities that include Mizzou, Duke, Notre Dame, Colgate, Vanderbilt, WashU, and SLU.
“Rocky brought experience and the example of servant leadership to our Athletics Department,” said CBC Principal Tim Seymour. “Our coaches have followed that lead, and our students and programs have benefited from his tireless efforts to deliver life-changing experiences to our young men. The results on the field speak for themselves, but Rocky’s greatest achievement is the way our teams have developed Men for Tomorrow who will lead and serve their communities throughout their lives.”
To ensure a smooth transition and continued success, Seymour and Streb worked together to identify CBC’s next Director of Athletics. The two quickly settled on CBC Math teacher and four-time state championship football coach Scott Pingel. Pingel will continue to lead the Cadet football team.
“Oftentimes, schools talk about conducting a ‘national search’ of potential candidates for a position like this one,” Streb said. “But it would be a silly waste of time to go through an exhaustive search to find a better person and leader than Scott Pingel. He loves the school and our students, he is an exceptional teacher, and the student-athletes in his football program have been successful on and off the field. He will take CBC Athletics to new heights.”
“Rocky Streb has been a phenomenal leader,” Pingel said. “He has allowed his coaches to coach by taking care of everything behind the scenes to make our job easier. He was always there for us and supported us 100% of the time - we will miss Rocky!”
Additionally, CBC will welcome Scott Brown back to campus as Assistant Director of Athletics. Brown spent 19 years at CBC as teacher, Director of Athletics, and head baseball coach before moving on to St. John Vianney High School in 2010. Brown will also join the baseball program as an assistant coach.
“As I move to the Athletics Department, I am excited to welcome Scott Brown back to campus so that we can continue what Rocky has established,” Pingel said. “Scott’s vast knowledge and experience will help us grow as a department and continue to serve our students.”
