Mr. Gary Ryan Receives 1818 M. Cathlin Casey Award in Teaching Excellence

Mr. Gary Ryan has been awarded the 1818 M. Cathlin Casey Award in Teaching Excellence. This award is not only for the top English teacher but for all teachers in the 1818 program who have gone above and beyond in their role as an instructor, embody SLU's values, and uphold the academic integrity of the university.

The 1818 Advanced College Credit Program is available at over 100 participating institutions across the country, offering a range of college credit courses to high school students. At CBC, Mr. Ryan has played a vital role in developing the 1818 College Credit program and has been instrumental in providing thousands of students with access to college credit classes during their high school careers.

Mr. Ryan has also been recognized for his mentorship of younger faculty, helping them to deliver high-quality instruction to CBC students and prepare them for collegiate work. His innovative approach to teaching, particularly in the "Process of Composition" and "Conflict, Social Justice, and Literature" courses, has allowed students to create and exhibit historical fiction, enabling them to develop essential skills in collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication.

Moreover, Mr. Ryan has been willing to open his classroom to 1818 teachers and college professors to allow for performance assessments of students' portfolio-worthy work. This dedication and innovation have led to Mr. Ryan being chosen for this prestigious award.

Mr. Ryan's contribution to the 1818 program at CBC is significant and deserving of recognition. He was formally awarded the 1818 M. Cathlin Casey Award in Teaching Excellence at the Annual End of the Year Celebration at SLU on April 19. Congratulations to Mr. Gary Ryan on this fantastic achievement.
