ST. LOUIS – Sam Briscoe will be moving on from his position as Christian Brothers College High School’s varsity basketball head coach after two seasons to pursue a coaching opportunity at the collegiate level.
Cary Lewis Jr., who has served as an assistant coach for the past four seasons, has been promoted to head coach.
Lewis, who is a School Counselor at CBC, has served as a varsity assistant and head coach of the JV and Sophomore teams, where he amassed a record of 61-15. He was also a part of the 2022 Class 6 state championship basketball team at CBC under the guidance of Justin Tatum.
“I am humbled to be named the next head basketball coach at Christian Brothers College High School,” Lewis added. “I am so blessed to be able to work at an institution like CBC, and coaching basketball here is just the icing on the cake. I would like to thank AD (Scott) Pingel and Assistant AD (Scott) Brown for the opportunity to lead this program into the future.”
“CBC is a dream job to me, and I am looking forward to positively interacting and mentoring the past, present, and future players who will don the Purple and Gold,” Lewis said. “We will bring an exciting, unselfish, and disciplined brand of basketball to floor. I can’t wait to get started.”
Briscoe was named CBC’s head coach in 2023 after Justin Tatum ’97 accepted a from the position to coach professionally in the Australian National Basketball League. Tatum led his Illiwara team to the ANBL Championship this past season.
“We want to thank Sam for his two years and wish him nothing but the best as he follows his dream of coaching in college,” CBC Director of Athletics Scott Pingel said. “We are so excited to welcome Cary Lewis, Jr. to be our next head basketball coach. The familiarity and continuity along with his basketball experience will help guide the CBC Basketball program for years to come.”
The Cadets went 28-28 in two seasons under Briscoe.
“I first want to congratulate Coach Briscoe on his opportunity to coach at the collegiate level,” said Lewis, who has 24 years of experience coaching in high school, college, and AAU basketball. “Sam is a brilliant basketball mind, and I learned a lot from him these past two years. Sam is more than a basketball coach to me; I consider him my friend.”
The CBC basketball program’s strong tradition includes seven state championships, most recently winning titles in 1997, 2014 and 2022.
